San Diego
I had a very love/hate evening with San Diego tonight.
I’ve been exploring more side streets and off the beaten path of my neighborhood on my bike recently.
I rode through Golden Hill then down into Florida Canyon and up Zoo Place to Balboa Park. Every time I go to Balboa Park when I’m not working I wish I spent more time there, its so nice. But every time I get off work I just want to leave. I live so close now I hope to spend more time in the park this summer.
So then I explored Banker’s Hill a little before riding down Laurel and up India to Gelato Vero. Riding on hill above the airport at dusk was really nice. With planes landing and taking off and a nice view of Point Loma. It all made me really like this city.
Then I got some coffee and grabbed the local section of the UT and remembered why I also hate this city. The Letters to the Editor and Editorials were very conservative, selfish and ignorant. So I picked up the Citybeat, our local alternative weekly that touts themselves as being a progressive paper. It was their “Summer Guide” issue with a whole bunch of lists of (mostly silly) things to do this summer. The first list was something like “4 reasons to go hiking in the east county” that was pretty cool, I read about a little hike I’d never heard of before. But it went downhill from there. A lot of them got pretty stupid and many of them had pointless homophobic jokes in them. In the list of “hills to ride your big wheel down” University just east of Park Blvd was listed, but the author warned “just don’t end up in Pecs by accident!”. Why was this necessary? The rest of the lists went on with a lot of pointless jokes like that. It makes me respect the paper less and wonder if they really think they are progressive publishing stuff like that?
I left the cafe and rode through Hillcrest and down the University hill, to my surprise I didn’t end up in Pecs, I just rolled on past and enjoyed the nice ride.
