RFID

Two years ago or so I was a little bored one afternoon and decided to make an RFID blocking wallet. Little did it matter to me that I didn’t have any RFID chipped credit cards. I’ve used the wallet ever since, getting compliments from duct tape loving bouncers and cashiers the whole time.

Well today I went to activate my new debit card, called the number, put in my info, hung up the phone and peeled off the sticker — hiding behind the activation sticker was a little “Paypass” logo. One Google search confirmed that Paypass is an rfid chip, so now I officially have a credit card that can be read by anyone passing by me. Or rogue rfid readers installed in doorways or any other small spaces. Great. Hopefully my wallet really does block the signal from being read.

(Not that I’m overly paranoid about this — although now I could have some fun and build one of these!)
